My leave from work is drawing to a close in a matter of days, and I'm proud to say that I have accomplished absolutely nothing of substance during 12 weeks at home. Unquestionably, the best advice I received before going on maternity leave was to forget about "getting things done" and just enjoy the time with my baby.

Sophie is 11 weeks old now, plump and happy. I just updated her webpage with some new photos. Enjoy!

Lessee...what's new since the last post?

  • The cheezcam is up and running again, so it's *possible* that you might catch live Amanda action if you happen to check it during the day. (Note: click on the link on the right of this page to be transported to the page for webcam viewing.)
  • My cat has developed a habit of peering into the kitchen window to locate me if I'm not waiting at the back door when Her Highness decides to come back inside. It's a really freaky thing to be standing there washing dishes or mixing up the umpteenth bottle of formula and suddenly see an urgent furry face appear in the window.
  • As of today, the "Who Does Sophie Look Like?" poll resulted in 45% of respondents indicating that Sophie appears to be a mix of both parents. Fortunately, only 6% of poll participants felt that Sophie doesn't look like either of us.
  • My brother visited and saw Sophie for the first time. He brought her a year's supply of wipes (thanks, Matt!) and held her and fed her twice during his stay.
  • We attended a birthday party for an old friend (meaning that he's a long-time friend, not that he's old) and I think I made a few people nervous by deadpanning that we could get "top dollar" for Sophie now that she sleeps through the night. (Folks, I'm not planning to sell the kid. Really. However, baby gear is expensive, so we may have to work up a monkey-and-organ-grinder street act to continue paying for all this stuff.)
  • An allergic reaction to both mangoes and peanut butter once again temporarily resulted in lips like Angelina Jolie's. Yes, I am a masochist.
  • I stopped hanging by the computer all day. Life's too short to sit around waiting for emails, especially since there's only a few weeks left before Sweet Pea starts daycare. *sniffle*

Above, a furry little critter we encountered last summer at the Montreal Botanical Garden. Coming up soon, a Montreal photo essay! After vacationing in Montreal in July, we returned home to a flurry of changes so I never quite got around to posting any pictures. Bonus, not only will I now be sharing the photos from our travels, I also have time to present snarky commentary on the whole trip!

[Noteworthy: our Nikon Coolpix 995 was stolen on our first day of vacation (also Sean's birthday), and having no other camera with us, we decided to buy a new digital camera while in Montreal. We ended up with a Nikon Coolpix 4500---nice upgrade.]

A few weeks ago I mentioned something about having plans for changes to cheezwerks.com during 2003. I meant to do a follow up post the very next day, but as it turned out I was busy having a baby that day and just didn't get around to updating the ol' website for some time after that. Alrighty, the aforementioned bambina is asleep now, so I'll elaborate on the proposed changes to this site.

In 2003, cheezwerks.com will be ALL NUDE, ALL THE TIME! (Heh heh, just kidding! The actual changes are more complicated but family-friendly. Sorry about any heart attacks my little joke may have caused, hee hee!)

    What to expect:
  • Sporadic main post updates until I come up with a more interesting format
  • Frequent updates to the sidebar info
  • Occasional updates to Sophie's soon-to-be password protected pages
  • Password protection in general (because I just got sick and tired of the Nosy Nellies who dig around here looking for gossip material or some proof that I'm living out whatever expectations they have of my life)
  • CheezCam is probably going away, mainly because I don't have a million free hours to mug for a webcam...oh, that and the fact that my mom keeps complaining about the "booby grey sweater picture" in my webcam gallery...geez
  • Some of my clunky old links are going buh-bye, and may or may not be replaced with sleeker versions.
And, oh yeah, I'm thinking about launching a new website of a wholly different variety. ;-)

And baby makes three...er, seven with pets.

Sophie Alicia was born Monday, January 6th! She's 11 days old now and getting cuter every day, of course. We're very proud and happy parents, even through sleep deprivation. Note the slightly glazed looks in this photo...

For a limited time, I'm allowing open access to Sophie's webpage, which includes her birth story, photos and anecdotes. This page will be updated frequently, but in a few weeks it will be password protected. (See main page for instructions regarding obtaining a password.)

There are plans for Cheezwerks in '03; will write about that later. Right now,

A few things that I learned in 2002:
  • Believe in karma.
  • My dog and my oldest cat are saints of the animal world.
  • Steer clear of people who don't have friends. The reason usually makes itself obvious, at your expense.
  • Everything doesn't have to be perfect all the time. Real friends don't need/expect perfection.
  • It's neither necessary nor possible to always be in control.
  • In my new town, it's not unusual to see the American flag used in holiday decorating---including nativity scenes. (Well, at least it's not the Confederate flag...)
  • An excellent philosophy (credit to my brother for sharing this one) is "Don't concern yourself with the things that don't concern you."
  • A habit of ridiculing service employees is a symptom of a very basic personality flaw that shouldn't be overlooked. (Yep, another type of person to avoid.)
  • Document and preserve it if you think it might come in handy later.
  • Credit my dad for this one: "A sign of a moron is repetition of the same behaviors over and over again, regardless of previous results." In other words, if previously traveled paths haven't been successful, choose a new adventure.
  • Producing something each day is important for the soul.
  • I'm married to a really, really good person. *heart*
