Sophie started kindergarten about five or six weeks ago and is loving it. Public school kindergarten is a full day program here, so this is a very different schedule for Miss Sophie, who was used to spending just a few hours a day in any given place/program prior to this year. While I wasn't worried about how she'd adjust to kindergarten academically or socially, I thought that she would feel it as a very long day.

Being ever the roll-with-it sort of kid, Sophie embraced the new environment and routine without any hiccups.

For the first few weeks of school, she woke herself up and got herself dressed. Often about two hours before the school bus was due to pick her up. One morning a couple of weeks ago, she walked around with her backpack on for a solid hour. I'd say the kid likes school!

So what has she learned thus far? Well...

1. One day when I got home from work, she offered me a fist bump and a nonchalant "Hey, bro." Under questioning, she revealed that her friend Rachel taught her that. So, picture a couple of blonde five-year-old girls walking around using urban slang.

2. She has learned how to spell more of her classmates' names, which she occasionally inks into her Barbie coloring books on the arms of the various Barbies as "tattoos of their boyfriends' names."

3. Zombie tag. With boys.

4. Purchased lunch is way cooler than boring ol' bag lunch from home.

Also, I'd like to point out that our oldest kitty, Mia, walked with Sophie to the end of our driveway and patiently waited with her for the school bus that entire first week of school. Pretty darn cute.

Getting Twitter now for my micro-posts, but...

If you're looking for music in the funky female singer genre, I cannot recommend enough Little Jackie. Try "I Liked You Better Before" or "The Stoop".

Huh.

A snippet from an online article: "The study also suggests that among married white women in the US, one pair of fraternal twin sets in 400 is bi-paternal."

It Is September and I Am Into:
  • Brit chick music, particularly "Foundations" by Kate Nash
  • Asking personal questions
  • Obsessive list-making (yet again)
  • One of my favorite covers ever, KT Tunstall, "I Want You Back"
  • Feeling wholly unimpressed by Sarah Palin
  • Newman's Own Organic Cinnamon Mints, which remind me of Lifesavers cinnamon candy that my grandmother used to buy for us about 25 years ago
  • Missing the beach, the sun, leisurely mornings with Sophie
  • Wondering if it might be possible to wrangle a bit more business travel before the year is done

Amanda: From the Latin Word Meaning "Bleeding Heart"

Last night saw a rise in suicidal activity among the frogs and toads on my street, a phenomenon that I've mentioned before. A friend offered the explanation that this behavior is probably less about tragic intentions than, say, drumming up a little excitement in the otherwise mundane amphibian life of eating bugs and trying not to get eaten by predators. There is merit to that point. However, the ones who are actually trying to cross the road are in the minority. Most of them just plop themselves down in the lane, watching and waiting for the sweet release of death between rubber and asphalt. By the time I realize that the leafy-looking brown lump on the road has little black eyes, unblinking in the glare of the headlights, it's usually too late to avoid squashing it.

I try to tell myself that it's actually a good thing for evolution, that running over the frogs and toads who lack the sense to get out of the way of oncoming traffic weeds out the dumber specimens and improves the collective amphibian gene pool. But I feel bad about it anyway.

And people, this is what gets me out of my car at 9 PM, in the pouring rain, while wearing a dress, to nudge a would-be casualty out of the road with the toe of my sandal.
