The Jesus Tomato

There's this little problem I get every year as soon as the last snow melts away: the compulsion to buy quantities of plants "for the garden." History has shown that one-half or less of these plants will actually make it into the garden. The remainder roast to death in their little nursery pots. I buy more plants anyway. I cannot help myself. The flowers are so lovely, they make my credit card go DOING DOING DOING.

About a week ago we picked up two healthy-looking tomato plants and temporarily put them in our laundry room. One of the tomato plants immediately wilted upon entering the house. I have never seen such a fast, non-trauma-related death of a plant. It just shriveled up and died overnight. The other one continued to thrive.

Tonight while I was getting rid of the tomato plant corpse, I noticed the grower tag for the first time. The plant originally came from a nursey named Help From Above Farm, which uses the slogan Looking to Jesus.

"Sean!" I yelled, "We bought a JESUS TOMATO!"

Sean yelled back, "Not only that, YOU KILLED THE JESUS TOMATO!"

In my own defense, I'd like to point out that I didn't actually do anything to the plant to cause its death, other than bring it into the house. Is it a bad sign that my home is apparently highly toxic to religious vegetables? And will I go to Hell for that?

And I thought that I was the only one who left new, tender plants in their peat pots to suffer...

Hey! Those were not only Jesus tomatoes, they were organic Jesus tomatoes.
