Tomorrow is another packing day; household contents rather than work tchotchkes this time. Different place, same theme, and I'm still in shock over the speed with which this is happening.

There is probably very little that could be done to my house to cause a Trading Spaces catastrophe. A fondness for weird paint colors sparked a burgundy kitchen, deep periwinkle bedroom, navy blue powder room and red powder room in the previous house. The new house features an orange powder room, a red kitchen (as of Memorial Day!) and a bedroom destined for wide blue stripes.
Now accepting suggestions for what to do with my family room (see picture to right) after chipping the 1980's mirrors off the walls...

Ah yes, I did forget to provide an update on Operation Mingo, as a friend has dubbed it. Well, here it is:
It rained Memorial Day weekend, which is no surprise considering that (1) it has been raining for a month here in the Monsoon Metro Area, and (2) nice weather on Memorial Day in Maryland is a rare occurrence any year. Since actual work in the yard was not really an option, I spent some time planning the flora and flamingo placement. (Hey, advance planning, there's an idea!) The design concept is becoming very much Pink Plastic Jurassic Park.

I've been using stevia a lot recently. In powdered form, it's great for tea and okay for coffee. No weird chemical aftertaste, either.

Over the weekend, I received a message to my work email address thanking me for my submission to a Washington Post recipe contest. Hmmmm, curious; I'm quite sure that I haven't entered a recipe contest for at least the past year. Haven't really cooked during the past year...
I'm resting on my laurels of an "honorable mention" (and $50!) from Better Homes & Gardens for a recipe I sent them several years ago.

I thought that the end, when it finally came, would be embedded in much more drama.
I'd had a foot out the door for a couple of years, and had even made a couple of half-hearted attempts at leaving. Without a guarantee that I was moving on to something better, it was easier to just stay with what I knew, however unsatisfactory. And then with the baby on the way, it made sense to stick around for another year or so until things stabilized.
So now, having found a better fit and having increasingly fewer compelling reasons to not leave, I made the decision and the announcement yesterday.
In place of whatever display I had expected, there is only mild sadness on both sides, acknowledgement that it's for the best, and - more often than not - a reaction of "I knew it was coming."

Ohhhh yes, I envision a backyard pink paradise illuminated by dozens of tiny mingo lights! A Key West party may be in order...

Today feels like I'm pulling when the sign on the door reads "push".
To begin with, somehow I did not notice that my shirt was inside-out until right before I tried to leave the house. "Tried" is the operative word there; I discovered that the car's battery had died, which meant that Sean had to turn around on his commute and drive back home to jump it. Then we discovered that a set of jumper cables wasn't working (fortunately we had a spare set available). Arriving at work, I realized that I had left my key card at home, which has only happened about three times in the three-and-a-half years I've worked at Good Ol' Company X. And when the receptionist handed over a temporary key card, I didn't bother to correct her when she recorded my name incorrectly. I figured today is not a great day to be me, so why insist upon it.

Despite unseasonably chilly damp weather that made it very unpleasant to be outside, it turned out to be a very good weekend.
A pleasant opportunity presented itself on Friday; I'm still mulling it over but I think I'm going to accept the offer. There's an amusing story about it already in the works...
- Saturday's weather was rainy enough to cancel the lawn games, but not too wet to grill up copious amounts of meat for our first barbecue of the season. Good conversations were had (doncha love sordid stories and the folks who keep on supplying the material!) and, most importantly, we spent time catching up with old and new friends. Let's do it again soon, okay? (I must admit, I'm a teensy bit disappointed that nobody asked me what's with the flamingoes...)
- I started a new painting today. It has been a few years since the last time I put brush to canvas, and close to ten years since I bothered painting facial features...I had developed a tendency to paint/sketch faceless people, which is either a manifestation of some subconscious psychological issue or just plain laziness. There is some contouring and reshaping to be done, but so far the results for this first effort are better than I had anticipated.

Cheezwerks is now a blog!
Trying to make good on the promise to update more frequently...and to post the lil extra pages that have been in production for months.
